Great review William. Can't wait for the second part.

The comparison to the OBXa reminds me ov a demo I heard somewhere between the Moog Voyager and the Minimoog. The Voyager sounded much more tame and its high-end response was more detailed, although not as tonally expansive or as dirty sounding as the original Minimoog.
It would be interesting to hear the Prophet 08 next to a Prophet 5 Rev 2 or 3. People seem to either love this synth or loathe it. I can't decide.

Jasyn - I totally agree. I'm surprised you could hear that through the video.

I think it's due to both DSI and the new Moog Inc attempting to clean up their instrument's audio quality so it has a high SNR. But as a result, they've lost some of the harmonic distortion that sounds good on the original instruments. There is a certain grunt missing from the P'08 that the Pro One gets very easily.

Great demo!

Very interesting parts of this machine is shown in a very coherent way. I will check it out in the nearest store.
After seen the video I'm even more keen on buying an OB-Xa!

I had the chance to demo the Prophet 08 for a few hours yesterday and I found the construction ov the 08 to be a little bit shoddy, in particular, the knobs.
The PolyEvolver seems to have a more intuitive layout as well as a superior build quality.

The knobs on the PolyEvolver literally came off if I applied even a small amount of upward pressure - to me the P8's knobs felt more securely attached to the shaft.

On the other hand, the shafts on both feel about the same - cheap and plasticy, and that's a shame. It's about the same quality as a Pro-One, which also used plastic pots with plastic knobs.

In any case, miles away from a 70's synth - or even a nice modern one from Access or Waldorf.

I had a P'08 for a while...it was good...but not great. I thought the extensive modulation features would "make up the difference". In practice, not so much.

Because of some functional quirks and its "just okay" sound I eventually sold mine.

Still, for the price and featureset, its the only game in town if you want new-with-warranty.

Great video. Both synths have their own personality and definitely classics I can´t wait for the second video. The po8 more for the road.

Thanks for the review. Prophet 08 has great 'hotness' in the sound, as people say.

The Prophet 08 is available in Asia ?

tak4,

I think it's available - the power supply is universal, so you should be able to import one. I'd try a major electronic music store in your country.

had my Prophet 08 for more than a year now and very pleased - it's the centre of my setup now ;) !

what I love about this thing is the 'sizzle' - it's got a lot of edge and bite.
